It seems to me that false doctrines are often defined as "truth" by their supporters in order to set themselves apart from the crowd as having "hidden revelation" that
other "spiritually blind" church-going people can not see. I saw quite a bit of this in the religious tradition in which I grew up.
We are told to continually grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. This means that we should always have open minds and realize that we must be continually led by the Holy Spirit into greater and greater understanding as we grow. However, I believe we must be careful when we hear of "truth" that does not relate to a greater revelation or inward grasping of the person and work of Christ.
Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life." (John 14:6). He said to the Pharisees "ye search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life: amd they are they which testify of me." (John 5:39). He said that the Holy Spirit's purpose was to "testify of me" (John 15:26).
Paul's desire for the Ephesian Church was that God would grant them a "spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him." (Him being Jesus - Ephesians 1:17).
I believe that if "new truth" or "unique doctrine" does not line up with the whole of the Word of God and speak primarily of the redemptive work of Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection, we should be careful of it. Paul said it was the "gospel in which ye stand". (1 Corin. 15:1-4).
