Being new to East Rockaway some of these stories are hysterical. Truthfully, all neighborhoods have a "cat lady" or drunks. It's not typical of East Rockaway. While I have not lived in this area as long as most of you people I can see the potential of this area. I don't believe that there is a conspiracy to keep East Rockaway down by the mayor nor the community. I do believe that enforcing "quality of life" issues can only help the East Rockaway area. Cleaning up the area mean more dollars for the home owners and for the town. Small businesses would benefit as well.
From what I read on the site, I believe the residents of East Rockaway are content with the faults of the community. I don't know the amount of people that live in East Rockaway however, I do believe that by not getting involved in the improvement of the neighborhood; that the neighborhood will continue to be plagued.
If you want changes:
Bombard the Mayor with calls and letters. Have meetings to discuss the situation with the legislature; their the ones who want your vote.

I don't know if that is a compliment by saying that I fit right in (in what?) However, since I will be living here for a long time to come, I am interested in anything I can do to help.

My personal email is Hoopsando@aol.com. If you would like to talk.

You're absolutely right that most towns have the problems that East Rockaway has. But we shouldn't settle for mediocrity. I want East Rockaway to rise above the pack.

I do aggree much of what's written here is comical, but some things I've seen on this board I can agree with.

more info on cats , here's what I recall.

The cat problem on some blocks is really bad. It's not one or a few domestic cats, it's feral cats fed by people thinking they are doing good.
Now the VILLAGE allowed one of these well meaning but mis guided persons to put in an official news letter that it was a feolony to trap any cats any time. This put a stop to cat control if there was any. The village never published a correction.
The news letter is the same one the buuilding and fire department write much more informed articles in, so it did appear to many that it was in fact true, it was not.

What about the rats? If you remove the cats you will be left with rats. We live near the water.

re the rats:

I'm all for cats that survive off of the rats. I'm not for feeding wild cats. If someone keeps feeding them why should they bother with your rats? I don't live that close to the water, I've never seen a rat in ER myself, but many blocks from the water on the blocks I frequent I see more than a fair share of cats.

I rearranged the cars in my driveway before I went to bed last night and drove around the block. I can honestly say that I saw 3 stray cats, and two of them crossed in front of my car. The problem is not responsible owners who register their pets and spay and neuter them. The problem is the elderly and other residents who claim they own a cat, but have no registration to show for it and simply leave food outside their doors and replace the food when it is empty. The village doesn't even need to send the cats to a shelter, they can just fix these cats and release them to the streets of East Rockaway again.

The Village IS a part of the Town of Hempstead. Have you ever wondered why we are "The INCORPORATED Village of East Rockaway"? It is because we are INCORPORATED into the Town of Hempstead.

trap neuter release sounds like the acceptable solution to most. the reality is much different.

the best way to drive reality home is by quoting the PETA recommendtion. If there was any group that one thinks should be for relase it's PETA ( throw blood on minks, members break in labs, etc )

<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.peta.org/mc/facts/fsc10.html">http://www.peta.org/mc/facts/fsc10.html</a>

"Because of the huge number of feral cats and the severe shortage of good homes, the difficulty of socialization, and the dangers lurking where most feral cats live, it may be necessary and the most compassionate choice to euthanize feral cats. "
