Chapter Four

There are some people, it is said, who are open vessels for the spirits of those who have passed on to other planes of existence. These people go through their daily routines looking and acting just like everyone else.

But there are things outside their routine; things outside the ordinary and beyond control, things that force a path into being. In simpler terms, some of us see ghosts; some of us do not.

It was dark, a deep, ancient, breathing dark. He wasn’t alone; he could feel the presence of the others. He could sense their attempts to pull at him, to direct his focus and attention towards them. It was as if they couldn’t become real until he acknowledged they were there.

He didn’t want to make that acknowledgement.

After what seemed like hours, Jake was still tossing restlessly on his bed. His sheets were a tangled mess about his naked hips, testament to his less than peaceful slumber.

He had decided not to go back over to Sara Pezzini’s apartment. He was afraid to push the tentative beginning he had made. Besides, he was just too darn tired.

Deciding for once, to just say the hell with it, he had gone back to his empty apartment. He didn’t know if he could sleep, his nightly sedative at the bar had worn off long ago. But he knew he had to try. He couldn’t afford to get sloppy now.

He stripped slowly, carefully placing his shoulder holster to one side and removing the backup piece from his ankle before reaching over his head to pull off his t-shirt with one hand and head to the closet.

Jake dropped the shirt in the waiting wicker hamper and then ran his fingers though the dark, blonde hair on his chest. He had already undone the first couple of buttons on his jeans before he realized he still had his shoes on. He kicked them off and then gave a sigh as his bare toes wiggled in relief at their freedom.

He finished undressing, lost in thought; his habits so ingrained now that he didn’t notice that he made no impact on the quiet and empty space of the apartment. His clothes, everything he removed were placed carefully away. It was as if the apartment was still empty; waiting for an occupant.

Daniel Woo was going to be a problem. That much he knew. Sara’s partner was just too perceptive. He was also tied in too close with Sara. Before Jake’s new gut feeling that Sara wasn’t who he was looking for he had wondered if Woo was involved, and if so how deep.

There was nothing in the file to indicate a romantic entanglement between the two, past or present. But that didn’t mean much. Just look at his own file, it didn’t show that….

Jake turned away from the closet and shut the door sharply. Unwilling once again, to let his thoughts proceed any further in that direction. There was only pain to be found there, and he had enough of that.

Woo had given him flack from the beginning. It was as if the other detective knew that Jake’s presence was something more than just a transfer to NY Homicide. Or it could have just been some East Coast/West Coast thing. Jake had overheard him talking to some of the other guys in the station about it.

“What kind of guy leaves California, all that sun, all those girls and comes to New York? It’s not even like he has any family here or anything.”

At the time Jake had found it amusing. The Detective was a lot closer to the answer than he thought. Why would someone leave everything they know?

Why else but to get as far away as you can from the things that remind you that there is a hole in your life; that your future is now as empty as that hollow place deep in your soul.

New York City was a long way from the beach. A long way from the life and man he had been before. He could hardly remember the vibrant, impetuous man he had been, a man who had everything to live for.

It was with these thoughts running through his head that Jake threw himself down on the bed. Maybe he could get lucky and fall asleep. It just usually didn’t work that way.

Nights were the worst. Even here in this empty apartment, one furnished with someone else’s life, he couldn’t seem to escape. There was nothing here to remind him of the past. It was just too quiet, too dark, and too easy for him to let the past wash over him in a wave.

Usually he ended up having to go out on the couch and turn on the television; playing some mindless drivel to make background noise loud enough to drive his ghosts away.

Cartoons were good, their bright colors and loud soundtracks as different from his dark and tormented dreams as he could get. He didn’t have to worry about what anyone might think, there was never anyone to see.

Resolutely, Jake closed his eyes and turned over onto his side. He had to get some sleep. He would have to think about Sara Pezzini, Danny Woo and the rest of this mess tomorrow with a clearer head.
