Chapter Ten

Another late night, more time spent on the computer. Jake sighed heavily and wondered if it were true that the radiation from your computer monitor would cause cancer. If so, then he was definitely a goner. He didn’t know how the geek squad did it.

But he did have some stellar intel if he did say so himself. He had not only found out who was his attacker at the Rialto but just maybe he had a new suspect for this “V” character. He laid the information aside in a manila folder. He was going to show it Sara and see what kind of reaction he could get.

It had been a long couple of days. Sara was still off on administrative leave, she was positive she wasn’t going to get reinstated. Jake had been trying to pull strings with some of the Federal Boys; if Pezzini was their best bet for the female connection to “V” they couldn’t let her slip out of sight.

As usual, Gossip had spread through the station like a wave. The usual stuff, rumors that she and Danny had been lovers, that when he wouldn’t leave his wife Sara had killed him in a fit of jealous rage and was pawning the blame off on Gallo. That had been one of the kindest.

The sheer magnitude of the firepower used at the Rialto Shootout was achieving cult status. A couple of the forensics officers had been less than discreet and the numbers grew with every telling. Some even mentioned a blade used to hack some of the victims to pieces, but there wasn’t much to back that up.

There was also talk of an aborted attempt on her life by Gallo. A dead man had been found on the roof of the building opposite Sara’s. There had been no luck identifying him until someone thought to check with Interpol and they discovered that yet another international hit man’s career had ended suddenly. He had been found with his high powered rifle inserted into one of his orifices and the top of his head had been blown off.

Jake had to smile every time he thought about that one. He would love to shake the hand of whoever had taken the guy out. The method used had definitely showed a unique sense of humor.

Pictures of the dead man had been posted up in the morgue with a myriad of suitable captions. Jake’s favorite had been the one that said “And you thought you had a bad day?” At least until the Captain had heard about it and told Dr. Po to take them down.

Jake almost smiled again as he thought of the perky brunette. It was amazing to him that she was so full of life occupied as she was day in and day out with death in all its brutal aspects.

Slowly Jake was getting a handle on the department. He was really getting to know more of the internal politics and where some of the skeletons were buried. He just couldn’t seem to make any headway in getting to know Sara.

The review board was going to be meeting in a couple of days. Jake had been trying to get in touch with Sara, she had to know by now that they had been partnered but she didn’t respond to any of his phone calls.

He remembered how hard it had been for him after Carla’s death. How much it hurt to stand there silently with his dress uniform pressing uncomfortably on his wound. To listen as they rehashed everything again and again. He knew what it was going to be like for her.

He pushed back his chair in disgust and headed over to his couch. He wasn’t even going to try to sleep tonight. It was going to be him and the cartoons.

Even as Jake settled down, shifting around in an attempt to get comfortable, the buzzer on his door sounded. He raised his head and stared at it in amazement. What the heck time was it?

And when was the last time he had heard that sound? He hadn’t had anyone over to this place since he had been in New York. It was just a stage, set with the props necessary for his cover.

The buzzer kept sounding and Jake finally got up and looked though the peephole. It was Sara! He grabbed his shirt and pulled it on before he opened the door, not wanting her to see the scar that showed over the waist of his sweatpants.

“Sara! what’s up?”

She looked bad. She was all sweaty, her hair was tangled and the circles under her eyes reminded him of his own.

“Can I come in, Jake?” She even sounded exhausted.

“Yeah, yeah. No sweat.”

He moved aside as she walked in. She didn’t seem to notice the tinned noise coming from the television.

“Bedroom?” She pointed to the door at the far end.

“What? Yeah.”

Jake followed her into the bedroom, wincing again as he saw the stupid turnstile the last occupant had installed. Like that would really attract a woman, letting her know that not only was she one in a line but that a running count was also being kept. Definitely romance at its finest.

Sara ignored all of that and just fell face first onto his bed. Jake looked at her in surprise and then nudged her leg a little. When she didn’t respond he just pulled the lacy afghan Carla made him up over her and quietly left the room.

Jake went back to the couch and turned off the television. He stared off into the dark. He didn’t think Sara had been drinking, he recognized the tired and scared look in her eyes.

Sometimes, the only way to escape the ghosts, the only way to keep your inner demons at bay was with another live human. As he listened carefully for the soft sound of her breathing, Jake knew that he too, would get some sleep tonight.
