Is that the person is basing the love of God on good works.
I didn't steal that five dollar bill off the counter, I hardly ever swear at home, I gave an old man a quarter three weeks ago, and I prayed to God to make me win the lottery. Gee am I a good guy or what?

It is by the grace of God that salvation comes to our life, through faith in beleiving there is no redemption outside of the finished work of Christ on the cross

Eph 2:8-10
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)
