There were times, Nikita learned, when Michael would get into one of his reticent moods and a whole evening could go by with him saying less than a half-dozen words. But Nikita didn’t really mind when he got that way; it was comforting to not have to talk after a whole day of meetings. Michael would put on some music and they would spend the evening working on their individual projects, and eventually, more often than not, Nikita would end up on Michael’s lap, cuddling in his arms.

Tonight Michael was in one of those moods but unfortunately for Nikita, she was nearly two thousand miles away and his silence didn’t transmit well over the phone. So far everything she asked was answered with either a yes, no, or some other monosyllabic reply.

“Should I say goodnight?”

There was a long silent pause and Nikita couldn’t help but feel that there was something more going on here than Michael’s usual silence. “Michael?” she prompted.

“I’m here.”

She frowned. “Are you okay? You sound a little… strange.”

“I’m fine.”

Nikita sighed again. He was definitely in one of his moods. “Is everything coming along okay for the opening?”

“It’s fine.”

“Did Chris talk to you about his idea for the brochure? He mentioned it to me before I left and it sounds really great.”

“Yes,” Michael said, “Its fine.”

Nikita cringed inwardly. There was that word again, ‘fine’. She swore if Michael said it one more time tonight, she’d scream. He was probably just tired, she sighed. Feeling a little exhausted herself, she decided to say goodnight. “Well okay,” she said. “I have a dinner appointment tomorrow so I probably won’t call. I’ll see you on Friday when I get back?”

“That’s fine.”

Nikita sighed. “Goodnight Michael. Sweet dreams.”

After Nikita hung up, Michael lay in bed and stared up at the ceiling. Was he wrong not to tell Nikita about the phone call he received earlier from Stephen Caldwell? Should he have told her about the shocked silence that followed his announcement to Mr. Caldwell that Nikita and he were living together?

Michael sighed inwardly. Okay, so maybe that part had been a little bit of a lie since Nikita and he still had their own separate apartments. But they spent all their free time together, including the nights, so what he had told Stephen wasn’t really a lie, right?

Michael frowned and his blood began to boil again as he recalled Stephen’s shocked reaction when he had told him that he and Nikita lived together.

“Excuse me?” Stephen had said, in a disbelieving voice. “You and Nikita… live together? You mean like roommates?”

“Roommates, bedmates…” Michael had replied, wanting to make sure Mr. Caldwell understood the situation clearly. “If that’s what you call it here in the United States.”

There had been another long pause and then Mr. Caldwell had said, “I’m sorry, I’m just having difficulty understanding how this could happen. Nikita and I are…” He had trailed off and Michael waited for him to continue.

"Nikita and you are?" Michael asked, curious at what the rest of Stephen's answer was.

"Never mind," Stephen had replied dismissively. "I'll speak with her when she returns." And then he hung up.
