Chris Davenport scanned the restaurant and, spotting Michael sitting at a corner table, made his way over. Chris had been a bit surprised when he had received Michael’s invitation to lunch since all of the details for the ads on the gallery opening had been concluded the week before and was now in production. But Michael had assured him that he still found everything with the ads satisfactory and that he had no intention of changing anything.

That was a relief. Not that Chris ever took Michael as being one of those clients from hell who insisted on changing details all the way up to the last minute. In fact, Michael had been very professional and articulate about what it was he wanted from the very beginning, which had made Chris’s job easier. He was curious then as to why Michael was calling this meeting.

Michael stood and the two men shook hands before taking their seats and Michael thanked him for agreeing to meet on such short notice. They spent a few minutes making small talk as a waiter came over and took their order and when they were alone again, Chris asked, “Okay, Michael, you said this meeting doesn’t have anything to do with the gallery opening, I can only assume then that it has something to do with my boss?”

The corner of Michael’s mouth twitched into a brief half-smile. “Close,” he said.

As Chris waited, Michael looked off to the side, the smile faded from his countenance as he sat and stared out the window at the street and the people passing by. He turned his focus back to Chris. “What do you know of a Stephen Caldwell?”

Nikita’s meetings ended half a day earlier than expected and, eager to get back home, she phoned her father’s pilot, Jack, and instructed him to get the jet ready to leave. An hour later they were airborne.

Settling into the plush leather upholstery, she closed her eyes and let out a deep sigh and she let her mind drift to a topic that lately she’d been preoccupied with. This week away from Michael had convinced her of two things she’d been in denial of; first, she really loved Michael and second, she wanted to be with him.

The admission was not an easy one to come by, and there was still a part of her that was terrified at just how much she wanted to be with Michael, but Nikita was ready to make the commitment. She planned to tell Michael that night over a romantic dinner that she was moving in with him.

Her lips curved into a smile and a warm glow seeped through her. This was right. She and Michael belonged together and nothing could tear them apart.
