Chris shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “Stephen Caldwell?”

“Do you know him?” Michael asked.

Chris nodded reluctantly. “I’ve met him a few times.”

“Who is he?”

Chris cleared his throat. He frowned and then he took a deep breath. “May I ask why you’re asking about him?”

“He called last night looking for Nikita,” Michael replied honestly. “I got the distinct impression he wasn’t too happy to learn that Nikita and I are together.”

“I’ll say he’s not,” Chris muttered. Michael arched a brow and Chris said, “Look, I think it’s best if you save any questions you have about Stephen for Nikita. It’s not my place to say anything.”

“I’m sorry if I’m making you uncomfortable,” Michael said with a sigh. “I’m not asking you to betray any confidences. Nikita’s away until tomorrow and…” he paused, gaze shifting to the window again, “I don't want to bother her while she's busy with something like this. But each time I hear his voice in my head and the tone of voice he used, I feel like...” Michael broke off. He lifted his glass and took a sip.

Chris shook his head. He chuckled softly. “He got under your skin, huh?”

Michael's mouth curved into a half smile. “I guess he did, and that's unusual for me.”

“Stephen can do that. He’s a nice enough guy but he could be very blunt in his approach, especially when it came to Nikita. It used to irritate the hell out of her.”

“So she did date him.”

Chris took a deep breath. What the hell. “Yeah,” he nodded. “She did. For over a year. A lot of people thought they’d end up getting married.”

“Did you?” Michael asked, and Chris shook his head.

“No. Like I said, he demanded too much of her and Nikita wasn’t willing to give it. From what I understand from Carla, and you have to promise not to let her know I told you this, Stephen proposed to Nikita a couple of months ago before he left to go on some work assignment out somewhere, I’m not sure.” Chris shrugged his shoulders. “Obviously he must be back in town and shocked to find out that Nikita’s moved on with her life.”
