Chapter 9

Carla snagged a glass of champagne from a passing waiter, and because he was cute, she flashed him a flirtatious smile before turning and going in search of Nikita. It was past eight o'clock and there was still no sign of the cute French guy Nikita had told her about. Not that Carla minded too much -- there were plenty of other cute guys in attendance tonight and several of them were here alone.

Ah, the joy of being single, Carla mused. She was actually dating someone but it wasn't like she had a ring on her finger or anything. No. Chuck would bolt quicker than a flash of lightening if she dared to raise the 'C' word. Spending the night over at her place once or twice a week was about as big of a commitment as she could get out of Chuck.

Men. Carla's lips twisted into a wry little smile as she sipped from her drink. They were great for a roll in bed but apparently – at least in Chuck’s case, very little else. Maybe this French guy would be different.

He certainly seemed to have made an impression on Nikita, Carla thought. She watched her glamorous friend across the room talking with Birkoff and a few others from her office. Birkoff still looked a little peeved about being cornered into this surprise birthday/Christmas ball, but Carla could tell by the way he allowed Nikita to link arms with him that Birky wasn't too upset.

Just then Nikita looked up and caught her friend’s eye. She waved and Carla made her way over.

“There you are.” Nikita linked her other arm through Carla’s. “Where’d you disappear too?”

“I saw a sculpture out in the rotunda that I wanted to look at. Pretty nice.”

They stood talking and didn’t notice the two men entering the ballroom at the other end.

Chris Davenport wasn’t as tall as Michael but he was muscular and had broad shoulders. Both were handsome in their tuxedos as they stood side by side and surveyed the room. Chris cleared his throat as he tugged at he collar of his shirt.

“I always hate these things,” he said in a low voice to Michael. “Reminds me of when I was young and my grandmother would starch all our shirts.”

Michael smiled and looked around him. The Waldorf was every bit as spectacular a hotel as he’d heard about. The Starlight room, where they were now, was beautifully decorated. A band of older musicians was playing a jazzed up version of White Christmas, adding to the festive mood of the room. “This is nice,” he commented.

Chris nodded. “The Wolfes always put on a good party. First class all the way.”

“Have you worked for them long?”

“About eight years.” Chris spotted Madeline and Paul out on the dance floor and he pointed them out to Michael. “They’re a nice family and good employers too."

Michael looked around the room, searching, and then his gaze settled upon the one he’d been looking for. Nikita was with a small group of people. Her profile was to him and she was laughing at something a woman was saying to her. The corners of Michael's mouth curved upward too.

"She's beautiful, isn't she?"

Michael turned his gaze back to Chris. He kept his eyes carefully blank. "Pardon?"

"Carla Mendes. The woman standing next to Ms. Wolfe." Chris gave a low whistle. "Very nice."

Feeling relieved, Michael smiled and looked back across the room, this time taking note of the woman next to Nikita. "Yes," he agreed, before his gaze zeroed in again on Nikita. "She's very beautiful."
