Chapter 8.

Nikita stood with her hands upon her hips and happily surveyed the Starlight Room of the Waldorf Hotel. What an afternoon! She'd spent the last two hours overseeing the final preparations for tonight's ball and was more than pleased at the outcome.

The Waldorf staff had satisfied her every request, including bringing in a huge evergreen that was decked out with full Christmas trimmings. The top just barely touching the gilded ceiling of the Starlight room. The tiny white lights on the tree reflected the glow of the crystal chandeliers, and there were candles on the tables surrounded by white rosebuds and tiny red bows. Now all she needed to do was get dressed and go pick up Birkoff.

She grinned broadly as she thought of her younger brother's reaction when he would realize that the intimate 'family' dinner she was bringing him to would include nearly three hundred invited guests! He'd kill her. Or want to, at least. No doubt about it. But, Nikita reasoned with a self-satisfied smile, it was time her little brother stepped out into the limelight. He didn't have to be involved with the family business if he didn't want, but Nikita wanted him to at least get to know the people. One never knew what the future would hold; maybe Birkoff didn't want to be involved in Section right now but things could change in a couple of years.

Taking one last look around, Nikita departed and made her way to the elevators and to the suite she had booked for herself. Carla was supposed to be meeting her soon and they were going to get ready for the ball together.

Feeling full of Christmas cheer, Nikita hummed a carol to herself as she entered her suite and locked the door behind her. The holidays were her favorite time of year and she was glad that this year they would be able to celebrate it together with the people at Section.

The message light on the phone was blinking. Nikita sat down gracefully on the chair next to it, picked up the receiver. The first one was from Carla. She was calling to let Nikita know she was running very late and wouldn't be able to arrive till around 7:30.

Nikita sighed, her mood dampening. Even if Carla set her watch an hour ahead, she'd still be late. Oh well. At least she'd be here. Nikita was dying to point out Michael Samuelle to her. Sure, Carla was dating someone else -- Bill, or Bob, or something like that-- but Nikita was certain that one look at her newest client and Carla would be hooked.

Standing, Nikita walked over to the closet and brought out the dress she'd bought for tonight's ball. It was simple, long, black and dipped low in the back. She thought again of Michael Samuelle and her heart beat a little faster. Nikita silently wished, not for the first time, that he wasn't a client of Section's.

Stop.

Shaking the daydreams from her head, Nikita sighed again as she laid her dress out on the bed. Michael Samuelle is your client, she reminded herself, no use wasting fantasies on what can't be. And besides, Nikita thought, he already admitted in their first meeting that work was his number one priority. What the hell would he think if he knew she'd been thinking about him quite often in the past few days, and not in a professional sense either.

"Oh jeez." Nikita rolled her eyes and headed to the bathroom. That's all she needed was to get herself all hot over a guy she couldn't even date.

Michael gave a sigh as he slipped on his tux jacket and looked in the mirror. He was beginning to regret having accepted Madeline Wolfe’s invitation to the ball tonight. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go - he was looking forward to visiting the Waldorf, he’d heard much about the beauty of the hotel – but he felt slightly uncomfortable attending when he was neither an employee of Section nor a friend of Madeline’s son. He had considered calling Madeline an making an excuse but then Chris Davenport had called and said he would be by to pick him up and, well, Michael decided why not? He didn't have anything better to do.

Liar.

He frowned at his image in the mirror. There was actually quite a lot of other things he could do. He still had the plans from the contractors to go over, and there was the order for the Paris Gallery that Pierre had faxed over which he needed to finalize, not to mention the invitation from his friend Rene to join him for drinks at a new club downtown. But Michael had decided to go to this ball instead out of curiosity.

That's right. Curiosity about a certain blond he couldn't seem to get out of his mind.

It wasn't that he was attracted to her or anything of that nature, he argued. Nikita Wolfe wasn't even his type. Yes she was beautiful --if you liked tall, leggy, blonds, which Michael didn't. He preferred brunettes and he liked them small. His curiosity about Nikita Wolfe, he reasoned, was merely an interest to understand the person who would be taking care of his account. Nothing more.
