Chapter 5.

Nikita stood on the curbside and waved goodbye as her parent's limo pulled away and merged back into traffic. It had been a fun evening and, in the end, she had admitted to her father that she was glad he had forced her into going to dinner with them. She was still smiling as she turned and made her way to the entrance of her apartment building. Her smile, though, quickly faded when she saw who was waiting for her in the lobby.

"Stephen." She remembered suddenly the several messages Rose had relayed to her through the day, none of which she had returned. Stephen, though, she knew, would not be angry. He'd be irritated -of that she was sure- but he just wasn't the type of man who would allow her evasiveness to rile him. Even now, dressed in jeans, a turtle neck and leather jacket, Nikita could see in his brown eyes that he'd already forgiven her for not calling him back earlier.

"Hello Nikita." He leaned in and kissed her lightly.

"This is a surprise."

"I take it you've had dinner?"

"With my parents."

Stephen waited for her to lead the way to the elevators but Nikita remained where she was. "I'm sorry I didn't call you back earlier," she said. "Things were busy at the office."

The excuse, she knew, sounded lame but it was true.

"That's okay." Stephen stuck his hands in his pockets. "We can go out for drinks… or maybe upstairs?" he suggested.

Nikita shifted restlessly and was about to turn him down, citing an early appointment the next day, but then it occurred to her that it was about time she had an honest with Stephen about where their relationship was, or rather, wasn't, heading. "Fine," she said, turning towards the elevator. "Let's go on up and we can talk."

Monique placed her year old son into his high chair and was preparing to feed him when the phone rang. She reached for it with one hand, cradling it between her ear and shoulder as she kept an eye on her son. "Hullo?"

"Monique, it's Michel."

"Michel!" She smiled, her green eyes lighting up as she removed the bowl of baby food out of reach from her son's grasping hands. "I was beginning to get worried. Why didn't you call when you arrived there? I told you to call me as soon as you arrived. It's been three days and only now you call?"

She could hear the smile in her brother's voice as he apologized and explained that things had been busy since he'd arrived in New York.

"Is everything okay? Are you well?" she asked.

Michael Samuelle's voice was calm and quiet as he said, "Monique, you worry too much. Remember, I'm the older one here. I look after you, not the other way around."

Monique snorted, a sound that made her young son smile. "Yes, well if I don't look after you, who will, eh?"

Over the next fifteen minutes, brother and sister spoke. Monique was full of questions and Michael patiently answered each one. After assuring her he would call her again within the next two days, Michael hung up and prepared to take a shower and turn in for the night. As he prepared to put away his attaché, a business card slipped out and fluttered to the ground. Picking it up, he saw that it was the card Nikita Wolfe had given him earlier.

He thought of the blond woman briefly, remembering her easy smile and professionalism as she had taken him on a tour of Section. He'd left Section without indicating whether he would sign with Section, but that was the direction in which he was leaning. He liked the people he'd met and he especially liked the openness he'd witnessed between Nikita and her mother, it reminded him of his own family.

Michael stared at the card for another moment, and then he placed it on the desk next to the phone. He'd give Section a call tomorrow, he decided, and ask them to draw up the contract.
