Londoner...but ended up in a Northern borstal - and boy, wasn't it extraordinary. Salfordians with chips the size of trees on their shoulders, and the more younger black kids who would be intimidated and bullied by the screws much more than they would be other 'Borstal trainees' (which was what we were called - what we were being 'trained' for, I still, at 54 still don't know). There was a bastard called Williams, a Welshman...and a Geordie who's name I forgot - but had it in for the more carefree and watchful black boys who didn't show any fear of the growling of the screws; if the more conceited ran rings around them, they'd take it out on the terrified first timers who were scared to talk to anyone.
Suspect this was one of many of the reasons why Borstals became no more...it was a dream for many of the screws.
