I did 2 Borstal sentences in the early 70's and yes quite a few lads had a spot tattooed on their left cheek about an inch or so below the bottom eye lid....it was just a mark of recognition so other ex borstal boys could recognise you once you were on the outside. I'm glad I never had one though it would have really hindered my work prospects.
