I did Portland and Huntercoombe in ,76- '77. Tat's were done in the nicks in those days, but on a rare basis. A lot of chaps would have their leg done with all the nicks they'd been in. I felt this was more to do with bragging rights, like 'hey ho look at me! I'm hard, I've done bird in all these nicks!' The Borstal Spot was a small dot on the right cheek. Done after one came out with indian ink and a needle. Talking from experience the spot had to be done after discharge and if you were unlucky enough to get a 'recall' the screws would know you been there,seen it & done it. They did in most cases give the respect due. Other cons would shy away from you 'cos you'd done your bird. LOL
