spent 18 months in Everthorpe borstal from March 1959 to September 1960, It was just recently opened and was a model prison for young offenders.
This internment ruined my life, I was raped and made to perform gross indecent acts by 4 inmates the leader of these being a bona fide psychopath, this went on right up to and including the night before my release, I was only 16 years of age and very small for my age.
I spent the next 40 years slashing my wrists taking overdoses and in and out of mental institutions (depressive illness) because I could never tell anyone about what had happened to me, I was after all a MAN and would never grass, I was so ashamed that I had let these SCUM do these things to me.
One day I was working on the Beck a nearby stream, I was near the completion of my time but choose to run away, I got only as far as the railway lines close by and was caught, in that two hours of freedom I was exhilarated free in my mind from the nightmare I was living.
I was seen by the governor and told "You stupid boy (not a man) why on earth did you abscond you should be happy here, you only had a few months left, why oh why did you run away, have you got trouble at home, I am placing you in the block on bread and water 3 days on and 3 days off for 18 days, you will be one of its first guests as we never had to use it. So I was punished for not telling.
Some of the screws (they wore civilian clothes) knew what had happened and one who was a nice guy pulled me to one side when I was released back to ST David's house and said I know who the bullies are Mike but unless you tell on them my hands are tide.
During my stay I got involved in inciting riots but was not charged, in one work shop we dismantled old GPO equipment and I pocketed hundreds of tiny nuts & bolts I later place them inside the locks of numerous cells, this caused havoc as some had been slammed shut with the occupant inside and some had there locks shot whilst still open it was a 24 hour operation with specialist teams of locksmiths brought in it was all very secret as these were the very latest in lock technology.
one time I put loads of oily rags in a wheely skip full of wood and sawdust in the wood shop and using my flint I set a blaze going, I was forever thinking up ways of getting the attention from my peers to show that I was a hard man and not a sixteen year old terrified child, it was all to no avail.
I am 66 now and Buddhist, YES I actually forgive those lads, in retrospect they must have had shitty lives and come from dysfunctional home, the main guy I have no doubt has not had a happy life, KARMA wise that is. I am happy now though it took a long time, the last 15 years have been okay.
It was on my 16 birthday That the judge at liverpool quarter sessions in Liverpool town hall said to me " I see by your records that it is your Birthday today and that makes you old enough for a spell in Borstal, this time well spent should turn you into a man of decent character, I had actually been on remand in Walton jail and I was only 15 in there I had been assualted by a psychopathic screw for talking whilst sewing mail bags, he had frog marched me back to my cell and when I entered he followed and puched me in the face and slapped me repeatedly for being LIPPY.By the way I also went to Wormwood Scrubs allocation and also Latchmere House the latter was nice place and wonderful food, I believe it was a prisoner of war camp once.
