I was in Gaynes Hall about 71 I suppose. I remember Rod Hill, he was one of the good guys (officer) I was in Jupiter and remember Whiz Bang - a tall lankey fair-haired biker, forget his real name. I do remember Phineas John the son of the first sea lord Caspar John who was in for taking part in some anti-apartheid activity outside the South African Embassy. He did the minimum 6 months, unheard of for ordinary inmates, but then again he shouldn't have been put away at all, should've got a medal. He was a good man, I forget his mates name. I remember the little Scots screw pulling him up for something, he told him in a very posh accent "Eat shit whitey". I worked in the kitchen and had a very easy time. The boss was called Fincham, a real gentleman, not at all like a screw. I remember Gledhill, not much older than us I suppose, a bit officious but O.K. Pulled a few strokes like changing the clock when I was given an hour's punishment. The screw, who I had noticed wasn't wearing a watch commented, "that went quick". Sneaked back later to change the clock back. I remember Abrahams who absconded, but forgot his spectacles. He came upon a quarry and couldn't see to find his way out. He came back covered from head to toe in limestone. He looked like a snowman. I used to print christams cards using lino-cuts for lads to send out and did a few portraits for some lads of their girlfreinds. I admit I usually made them a bit prettier then they actually were.
