the red room

every night you proved
your uncontrollable craving to control and persuade,
and i let you,
but only to watch you falter,
and i smiled.
your foolish influence burns you,
i see your scars.

you try to mimic yourself
but you don’t know you.
lost in your own masquerade…
who painted your face?
who poses as your shadow?
it is me no longer.

i endured layers upon layers of your grief.
i wallowed in your pools of pain,
saturated my soul with your torment.
you stifled me in your swamp of distress.
i choked on your putrid anguish,
yet I live to tell you.

now you fight your own restraints.
irons that burn and bind
constrain your heart and flesh,
asphyxiate your mind and soul.
impenetrable are your shackles
that you bound yourself in.

and you look to me for an escape?
ahh how soon you forget
where you left me …
crying in my own agony,
free-falling in my anxiety
blood seeping from without me
remember the white room?
when i left there
it was the red room…
