Anggun in Concert
Espace Julien, February 3, 2001
A few years ago, a little no-one arrived from Indonesia (and no, it's not a Swede), sparkling personality, a killer smile: here is Anggun, arriving in Marseille. This time, it's not merely a short visit. No sir! She's here to please the ears and the eyes by giving an emotional concert featuring her journey since her debut in France with her Marseillaise helper, the maestro Eric Benzi I. If didn't know better, on that night, the warm public had given up the velodrome for the young Javanese princess (uh, there's no picture). That could be a sign for an overheated atmosphere.
There, she didn't seem to have but one aim in her public's mind. Perhaps, it's because "Grace born from a dream" has decided to live each moment with a moving sincerety, a condor, nostalgique in such a way that the emotions present themselves in each of her songs. Whether it's about the "Fields of Pain (the french version of "Rain" from Chrysalis)" or about the "Forbidden Love", whether she sings in English or in French or even in Indonesian (a magnificent language with an exotic accents and poetic softness), through the text cowritten with Eric Benzi, Anggun gets across the undescribable dreaminess that touches the heart and mind while leaving towards the other destinations.
Because the journey always has an end in one or the other of her albums. When it's about a walk by the ocean, about reaching the shores that exist only for her, or about becoming her compass: she believes in the desire to achieve love and the want to love. "Be the master of your destiny and forget the Rain," she said. Even if in Chrysalis, the exotism of Selamanya has given way to the introspective analysis of "her contrary desires (Désirs Contraires - red)," her latest album. Written very delicately, the album resembles an intimate journal (not only for her), a confession from the end of the world where the pages are endlessly written with the public who adopted it in in 2 x 3 movements. But all of that doesn't exist if we forget the quality of her first albums released in Indonesia. "You lied (french version of Chrysalis)" and "A world in its place (french version of Tears of Sorrow)" reminds us of the energy in "Takut" or the rock influence with French sensibility. This time, we got a chance to hear a particular version of "Walking on the Moon" as an homage of the anglo-saxon influence that with the traditional melody of bamboo flute, lulled her to sleep in Jakarta.
These different styles she adopted throughout her long career, reflects the many marvelous facets of Anggun, showed throughout the concert. These pieces of a frenzy enthusiasm seem to contrast with the melancholic note of "You Swim (french version of Want You to Want Me)" and "Broken Dream" but through magic, it actually complemets the multiple flavours and odors that remind us of Indonesia and transformed the concert into a sensual journey where Oriental dreams mixes with Western stories. Because to wish for snow to Fall on the Sahara (as rare as a phenomenon in Marseille :-), is to wish to change the world so that it becomes something intimate and privileged of a love story or something more vast and holistic where everyone agrees to put it back in its place.
If on that night, the public had such a feeling that they had seen the songs that were be played, probably that was because in an instance, in a "gesture of love (french version of Look into Yourself)", the public and Anggun understood each other (or perhaps they somehow managed to get the Track List J). This love was offered from both sides, to the point of making the glass tremble (not of some other reasons). An "I Love You" was winked on the night of February, 1998 where a volcanic young woman had just won a certain victory. But, "by the moon", Anggun had promised to come back and what made it even better was that it was the public who offered her. In more than 33 countries, her albums, whether it be self-titled (Anggun - Japan 97) or English (Snow on the Sahara - US) had always ravished the world. In Italy, Chrysalis had already become platinum while she take on the world with her world tour which will start on April.
It would've been too bad to leave in "Broken Dream." And so, just like those who know how to stay loyal to themselves, Anggun came backstage to chat with her admirers. And in a wink, she promised to come back very soon. She then, left just like a rose, "a rose in the wind," it's said. We then had to let everything sink in as we had just been everywhere with her "contrary desires." See you Anggun, meeting you is a privilege...
