Subject: Machrihanish - 1983/1986

Hi group. Found this site by accident while looking for photographs of Machrihanish around the net. I'm afraid that any unusual activity at Mac totally bypassed me when I served there between 83 and 86. Yes there were USN Seals there, yes they carried out the occasional exercise (mainly at night with runway lights doused - they would then "mark" a runway with chemical glow sticks), yes we opened air traffic at odd (i.e. middle of the night!) hours but only for air ambulance flights. As for the US Navy, all standard ops with P3s I'm afraid.

In fact as an air trafficer for that period, it would have been impossible to operate the airfield without our being aware for lots of security type reasons.

I know there are some that would say "Ah well, he's ex-forces, he would say that" which is a shame because the more people like myself and some of your other contributors try and clear the muddy waters, the muddier they get!

By the way, I ain't a de-bunker either. I seriously hope that one day somebody will turn up to help us sort out the mess the whole place is in!
