FYI.
The underground complex at Box Hill has many miles of tunnels, most of which are now disused. They came into being years ago when they were the site for quarrying the famou 'Bath Stone' used in buildings. During the war they were the site of factories producing aero engines etc. Later part of the complex became a storage depot for the Royal Navy. There are three sites belonging, or used to belong to the RN. Copenacre, Spring Quarry and Monks Park. The entrances to each were separated by several miles but all were connected underground. One of the underground sites became the location for what was known as TURNSTILE, the location that the government of the time would have legged it to in the event of nuclear war. Turnstile was accessible via a spur line from the Chippenham-Bath rail line at the Chippenham end of Box Tunnel. If you travel on this line to Bath and don't blink you will still see the old entrance long since boarded up. Another part of the underground complex is occupied by Royal Air Force Station Rudloe Manor. This site contains part of the military defence communications system there is a book which identifies this site as COMMAND DEFENCE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK, this however is incorrect, it is not a Command HQ location. Its correct title is, or used to be up to the late 1970's CONTROLLER DEFENCE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK. Now its all computerised. I havent been there since 1979 so I dont know anything about the new site that has sprung up. Rudloe Manor used to be an 'Open Plan' site but now you can't get in to the domestic site without authorisation. Most of the airmens time off was spent in a local club called the Flamingo Club, just a hundred yards down the hill from the domestic site entrance, we used to call it 'Flamin' Joes' Brings back many memories just thinking about it. I used to live in the single airmens acommodation known as Lancaster Block, so if there is anyone out there who remembers this, Live Long and Prosper!
Regards
Alan
