Subject: Why I don't attend [Volume 1.i]
In reply to: Peter 's message, "Re: Fans who stand" on 02/ 4/03 5:27pm

I have always been a huge sports fan and coming to Cal Poly I knew quite a bit about the history of out athletic department. I have gone to more Poly Football/Basketball/Baseball games than probably 95% of the student body. Schnieder turned me off of the basketball program with his run and gun no defense style. The atmosphere was not enough to keep me interested in going to the games (I'd rather watch Duke or someone else play in a real college setting). The only difference between Mott Gym and my high school is the chairback seating on the West side (and that weird press/skybox). The style of play is also an issue with the football program. Mustang Stadium (although not terribly nice) is in a great setting but if I wanted to watch the spread option I would have gone to Southern Utah. Once again, the atmosphere is not enough to keep me going to every game (I go to watch a good opponent: Northern Iowa, Montana, Davis). The Football fans are some of the worst I have ever seen. The student section is dead silent when the opponent has the ball and makes noise on when CP has the ball on third down.

Basically, attendence, fan awareness, and school spirit would be a whole lot better if we had an AD that knew what the hell he was doing. The only thing that I can say about my 4 years at Cal Poly (athletics) is that we built a really nice baseball field.

Sidenote:
Class of 99 recruits that played 4 years:
3/20+ football
0/3 basketball
