Subject: Greetings team Nixon

Hell Nixon teammates!

I am looking forward to the competition and getting to know each of you. Without getting too pompous, I think its terrific that people from all over the world from different backgrounds and cultures can come together and co-operate in a shared endeavor like this. If everyone played city building games the world would be a much better place.

Anyway we seem to have a suitably diverse team. Sharon/norahs2000 is from Malaysia, Jan/Nimlot from Denmark, Anita/Nietje from Holland and I was born in England now residing in Chicago, USA (GMT +6). I am male, 54 years old. Others?

Glad the map is the same as the audition map, at least some of the mapping can be reused. Great idea to trap the Minotar on the island, Sharon. I didn’t think of that and went the hero route which was both expensive and time consuming. I had only 13 elite houses but as the goal was number of people rather than number of houses I concentrated on filling them up. Finished with 185 people in elite housing.

The scoring for the contest is interesting and deciding what to build to achieve the maximum score will probably be the difference between the teams. I suspect space will be the limiting factor on the map, so some initial thoughts on scoring:
 An estate is worth 15 points (plus 2 points for its 20 residents) and takes up 4X4 (16) tiles. The same space can hold 4 townhouses, 240 people and scores 24 points.
 A sanctuary is worth 75 points, same as 5 estates or 12.5 townhouses. 5 estates take up 80 tiles while 12.5 townhouses use 50. The space requirements for the possible sanctuaries are – Zeus 384 tiles, Demeter 216, Aphrodites 84, Athena 192, Hades 294.
 The above would indicate that the best way to go is to fill everything with townhouses. Estates don’t contribute as much, to say nothing of the space and cost required for theaters, the stadium, horseranches and bronze/armor industries. Of the sanctuaries I suspect Aphrodites might be worth building because of its positive effect on appeal and population. It is also small.
 Of course I haven’t played the game yet. Game events might impose other considerations. For example if hoplites are needed for military reasons.

Unfortunately I will be travelling October 8 – 18 and will have limited computer and no game access. I am retired, however, so when I return I will be able to spend full time on the contest and hopefully contribute positively to the team.

Thanks for setting up the forum Carboran, this is a great way to communicate. BTW, should we continue to address each other by our nicks (eg Elf), or use real names (Mike in my case)?

GO TEAM NIXON
