Dear Beth Ridens I want to tell you how brave you are. I was 2 years old when I was burned. My mother was cooking something in the kitchen when a pan of grease caught fire. She thought I was safe in the other room. Well I snuck in behind my mom and reached for something next to the stove . This caused the grease to pour on my head, down my chest, And back. Some how during this time I wiped the grease with my forearm keeping it from getting into my eyes. Thus saving my eyesight. After a few days in the hospital during one of my dressing changes. My left ear came off in the bandages. I had a really great doctor who reconstructed a ear for me. Most people cant that it is not the one I was born with. That child that was burned when he was 2 years old is now 36 years old. You want to know what I think might help. Tell kids the truth. The truth that most parents dont know or are afraid to know. I was told that when kids were being mean to ignore them and they will go away. Well they didn't. It is one thing for a child to hear mom or dad say you are ok and you are precious. You are normal dear child. But from a child that heard these same words. It did not work. I frelt that it was my parents, that they ha to say this. It would have helped if i had heard others outside my family say the same thing. Kids need to hear that they are ok from kids. Kids need to hear from their own peers that they are ok. Be kind to them. Hold them when they cry and be there when they need to talk .
