Subject: Memory usage

I know this has probably been covered many times before, but I need to know some options. Envision uses massive amounts of memory (depending on image size, of course). I understand that it is because the entire image is in memory, but this is killing me. Opening a given map in my software at 100% is using upwards of 350MB of memory in the task manager. Using a competitors software, the same image uses about 48MB - zooming does not effect this. Otherwise their software sucks, but there is no way mine is going to work worth a damn on anything but high end computers.
So how do they do that and what are my options with Delphi? Thanks.
