Subject: Maximum Compression?

We are evaluating your image library for use in a database application. There could be a significant accumulation of stored images over time, so we are concerned about keeping stored data to a minimum. We are not interested in licensing GIF or LZW. The more I read about image compressing, the more confused I get, and the more I respect what you have done. It seems as though .jpg would be a good choice, but so does .TIFF CCITT group 4.

I am a novice to imaging so any education you provide will be greatly appreciated.

BTW, lossy is OK for our purposes.
