There is not particular reason why the methods are static. I don't think every method should be virtual, as some methods may not be intended to be overriden. Just let me know the methods you make virtual, and I will ensure the next release has the methods virtual.

To determine the type of image, there is a function in EnDiGrph unit which returns the appropriate TDibGraphic derived class to load a particular file given the filename.
See EnDiGrph FindDibGraphicClass and NewDibGraphic.
