Agree, some people are that deranged that it wouldn't make a difference.

Others may only become so when they've had a few too many to drink or had some other substances.

But it's not necessarily just violence either. What about players lining up for goal on the boundary and someone is groping them or holdig them back wwhile the clock is ticking and they are trying to concentrate.
In golf they expect complete silence when a player is having a shot.
I acknowledge that would never happen in the AFL but there are still expected conditions to play in. Having it wide open for fans to touch players (without consent) is not part of the game or part of those expectations. And yes it may be a once in a blue moon occurence but the idea is to keep it that way.

I think it's a bit of an exaggeration on Lachie... A coward punch only in the sense that it came from behind. But punch is overkill. Barely a tap. Flicking his finger at him probably would have hurt more. Still a stupid thing to do. And under the rules, as they are, it got what it deserved.

I'm not sure if the AFL have set rules or guidelines for homophobic and racist slurs or even for the fan last week. But to me, 5 weeks and a training course seems fine. 1 year of not watching live footy is severe for the fan but in the scheme of things, big whoop. He'll be back next year and hopefully won't touch players during the game again.

But yes, it's relative to what we as individuals are willing to accept. Some will think it's fine otherwise will think it's too much, others not enough. No doubt I've been left puzzled with the punishments players do and don't receive over the years.

  • Out of all the coward punches that have killed and seriously injured I wouldn't be putting Schultz -- Pyeman WPBD, 13:30 15/05/24 Wed
  • Schultz looked bloody angry. The guy may have deserved a clip - it wasn't much of a punch. -- muddy, 14:20 15/05/24 Wed
  • Maybe you need to look up the definition of a "coward's punch". -- Porter, 10:17 16/05/24 Thu
