In reply to: Chicken wing 's message, "Steene had a good game but will be required to sustain that effort over weeks..." on 12:48 28/04/25 Mon

24 minutes in. from the 1st quarter, Cox at CHF, Steene has moved to FF, Smit has taken the ruck contest, 24 minutes in.

a long kick into the forward 50

West competes in the air, ball comes to ground, Steene swoops on the ground ball and flicks it up to Mahoney? for a goal.

couple of things.

1. Never listen to the commentators. I always watch with the sound off at VFL level, they call it as "Brilliant recovery from West!" when in fact West is still on the deck.

2. It is a desisive bit of forward play from Steene, shows excellent reaction time, he pounces on the ball before his opponenet even knows whats happening and dishes to the crumber with, to use a Bonesism, alacrity.

so I can add a second direct goal assist to the long kick to Cox in the second half for Steene.

1 goal 1 behind and 2 direct assists.

26.45 in Cox takes his only mark before the dying stages of the 3rd quarter. kicks the ball over the hotspot to the left goalpost off hands for a throw in.

The kick called for in the circumstance is to 15 meters in front to allow your talls, of which we had several, to compete.

Steene then contests and wins the following throw in, the ball comes out of bounds then Steene wins the resulting stoppage again, this time to advantage, with the forward kick finding Mahoney again, Cox being caught behind and not coming at the ball.

Now this is not a direct assist for Steene, but he is the score launch with the hitout to advantage that is roved to be kicked to Harry for his second.

Steene then moves back into the ruck for the resulting centre bounce and wins tghe secondary stoppage with a hitout to advantage to Allan that leads (after a bit of bouncing around and some nice work by DeMatiia) to our nesxt shot on goal for West.

in conclusion, Steene was influential in the first term. Cox was not.

And it's not an "early stage of development", Steene is approaching 22, he's been on the list for 3 years, he's 2 years older than his likely opponentat the Cats, O'Sullivan.
