Tough on them? Maybe. Probably should have said your whole defensive game (on what I saw yesterday and I'll admit to not seeing a lot of woods games this year) needs an overhaul.

Forwards didn't chase, midfielders were more interested in trying to spread/create (which worked for awhile mid patch of the game) and put the onus onto the opposition (in this case, my lot) to get after them.

But that backline, even allowing for the inexperience. Harry should have been given the flick like the Shaw bros. Clearly playing for himself. Toovey isn't anywhere near what he was prior to the knee. It's a hard call to make but he's the type that needs to give you rebound as one on one, he's not much chop.

The four kids? Marley did ok. Frost looked lost and when he had the ball, didn't seem to have instructions/game-plan on how to dispose of it. Keefe much the same and a lad his size not taking a single mark for the game. Leaves you wondering. As for Langdon who I was interested in looking at given the wraps he has been getting. Even prior to being subbed off, he looked a fairly run of the mill hbf. Broomhead created and ran more when he came on for him I reckon.

Maybe recruit a couple of older blokes like we did with Lake and Gibson to marshal up the defence? We play Hodge, Gibson, Burgoyne, Mitchell, the two mentioned. They all, especially Hodge and Mitch, give a lot of instructions on where to position, slow or speed up play, rotate through set play. Don't see Swan, Ball or Harry doing that. The only player who instructs out on the ground and it's no wonder he's your Captain and best player is Pendles. And as good as he is, if other sides are rotating (like we did to him) different tags on him every ten minutes or so, no wonder he has run out of legs in the last few seasons when the final rounds come up.

Bucks has wanted to make his own side and not copy Mick. My pov is he's trying to create a clone side of himself and doesn't accept that the players he's got at his disposal simply don't (Pendelbury aside) have his level of talent.

Trade out a few older blokes with currency (Swan, Ball, Harry) that might nail you some solid late first round/early second round picks. Cut the loss of Young (he will gain you 100m's with 40 of run and 60 on the kick but where the ball ends up is anyones guess). Bite the bullet of one of Grundy or Witts. They could possibly bring a really good pick early in the draft given the currency (which I personally don't understand and think we paid way over the odds on McEvoy). Leaves you thin in ruck depth but give me a shot at selecting a young gun mid (Dangerfield, O'meara, Boak, Wingard, Wines). Last three all now guns for Port and their charge up the ladder is no coincidence from my pov that it's on the back of a young creative midfield and not having a good but not great young prospect.

We could have had a couple of Dunstan, Acres or Imprey if we had held our picks. Instead we got an average stodgy ruck that can't tap, is best played as a defensive follower and we keep playing him up forward (when he's not injured).

All clubs make mistakes and imo, McEvoy and his trade is our mistake of recent times.

Overall though, one mistake can be covered if you get something else correct (and Garlett wasn't it). I reckon that will hurt us down the line unless Sicily, Ceglar and a couple of others come good. Luckily, the signs are that Cegs will be a solid player and a few rookies and speculative punts (Ross has the talent, application and staying injury free he could be very good as a very cheap pick up).

Still, while Eddie is in thrall with Fig, I can't see some radical change (which I think you need) to your whole footy dept. Thereabouts in most of the coming seasons. But relying on one stand out champ in the Capt. Hot and cold marking forward in Cloke (another I'd trade, good currency for a side like Footscray and it'd get you deep into the early selections of what's being called a good draft coming up) and dwell for a couple of seasons, stock piling talent to come good in the later part of this decade.

But Im not in charge of your footy dept and Im thankful for that. Nothing personal against Bucks, I just dont think he's the right man to turn your fortunes around.
