"West Coast bashing was in vogue on Thursday night as current and former players, commentators, journalists and fans alike united in disgust at the booing of Jobe Watson. Folks were incredulous that Jobe – a "champion" of the game, as though it should make any difference – would travel to an away stadium and not be treated with reverence and polite respect. Eagles fans lack class, cried the outraged. They're hypocrites. They should be ashamed.

Oh puh-leeze. There are eighteen clubs in the AFL and we are confident that supporters of at least 16* would've treated Watson with just as much disdain. Eagles fans are a one-eyed bunch, no doubt, but the reception they gave Watson was fair. It was an accurate reflection of the unease with which most football fans currently regard Essendon; a problem compounded by the league's spineless handling of the matter and a paucity of agenda-free analysis in the media.

Fans are being drip-fed worrying tidbits from news vendors while the league keeps them in the dark and the fraternity of retired AFL players (see: Luke Darcy and Matthew Richardson) carries water for its future members. Watson was always going to be jeered, whether by West Coast supporters, Brisbane supporters or Collingwood supporters. That anybody was surprised by the reaction at Patersons Stadium demonstrates how many people are underestimating both the gravity of the investigation at Windy Hill and the depth of ill feeling welling up in the wider football community.

*GWS fans wouldn't have shown up, and Bombers fans only boo Brent Stanton."
