of your family balance sheet is RED. You are in debt.

But you know that it's OK for you to be in debt. You need a roof over your head now, but haven't got a spare half-mill. You do however have the capacity to earn sufficient money to pay off your loan in time.

Likewise, just about every country in the world is in debt, because they need infrastructure etc now, and haven't got the readies on hand. But each country has got an earning capacity that will see them through.

Running a surplus isn't a cure-all. In fact Costello's simplistic pursuit of that end has cost the country dearly - eg we still can't get our raw material onto ships fast enough. The queues off our cargo ports are remarkable.

Of course John and Pete had enough cash in hand to build that Adelaide to Darwin rail link. No real need - but there was en election in the Terrrtory to win!

And Kings College was in dire need of a second rifle range, so there was plenty there to widen the gap between private and public schools.

And as for your suggestion - hidden in your excellent point about Greece - that increasing taxes is a good way to resolve a county's economic woes. Well let's just say that I am with you comrade, but many others on this board will not be happy!
