Family Vacation

“You know, I like this,” mused Sally as she lay back on the sunlounge at the side of the verandah, “I’m glad you convinced me to come.”

‘It took some convincing too’ thought Dave, remembering the bitter arguments they had over the destination.

Then there had been the disagreements over what they would do when they arrived. Once they had decided where they were going, Sally had begun to gather every flyer she could find at every travel agency she could find and put together an itinerary to rival the Prime Minister’s.

It was always the same, with him wanting to relax when he got a break and Sally wanting to get out and do things. Dave put it down to their daily routine being so different. While he was out all day marketing products, talking to dozens of people every day, Sally was at home, most of her time consumed by cleaning, with an occasional break when she took on a rare client.

Sally made formal and wedding dresses. She was good at it too, but since they had moved to Ruse for his career her established clientele had dwindled away and she had found it difficult to break into the market in the new area because of another well-known designer already having the goodwill of the market.

David didn’t know what he could do to encourage her. She didn’t seem to have the same drive to succeed that she once had. He had even suggested different marketing tactics to her, but Sally had rebuffed any ideas Dave put forward.

More and more it seemed that she was closing herself off from him. A distance had formed between them that left Dave aching to just hold her, but even now Sally had dragged her chair slightly away from his before lying down. Once she would have pulled it closer.

Dave hoped this vacation would bring them closer again. That was why he had decided that they needed to spend some time together without any distractions. He felt that he’d chosen the perfect place. Dave had determined that here he and Sally would do whatever was needed to heal their marriage.
