Subject:
Ferals and stuff.
Well I just got back from the region 1 speech and debate tournament (for schools in California, Washington and Oregon) late last night (left on Thursday morning) I was going to post and let you all know I was leaving but the board wasn't working.
AND NOBODY NOTICED I WAS GONE! *sniff* LOL! I'm just kidding!
Luckily you were not too chatty (SHOCK! HORROR!) and I only had to spend 2 hours on catch up. LOL!
Anyway while I was gone one of the newest (3 week old aprox) litter of ratlets escaped and his mum then escaped to go look for him (I'm guessing that's what happened).
My parents caught them both but not knowing her they belonged they decided to put them in a seemingly empty cage. Unfortunately it wasn't empty it housed my female mouse (who is an albino and dislikes light so she had built herself a network of under bedding tunnels to live in).
Now rats despise mice and will hunt them down and kill them. Poor little girl had no chance... My parents saw it happen before their eyes and said it was quick...
Also the filter on both of my main fish tanks packed in and were in danger of starting a fire! I came home to this LOUD rattling noise and a burning smell. So now the tanks will need daily partial water changes until I can get the filters repaired or replaced...
Anyway didn't do too well at this tournament. Have a new debate partner and we lost all of our rounds , tied for 11th place in extemporaneous speaking and didn't do too badly (don't know where I placed) with my persuasive speech.
Anyway heres the funny bit.
The coach insisted that I have at least three events for this tournament (everyone else had two) ut what with Megan and Midterms...
I wrote this speech at 2am on Friday morning and delivered it that same morning and actually did better than a bunch of people who had been doing theirs since August!
Now the really funny bit is that I wrote it on the problems of feral animals! LOL!
Now seeing as people here have been discussing it and as many of you are from Aus. where it is a major problem. I was wondering if you could help me out a bit with research (The State Championships are in 10 days) If anyone knows of any online articles or would not mind being used as a source citation. Let me know, okay? Thanks!
Now I have to go and clean some fish tanks... Isn't it great to be home? LOL!

Sorry to hear about your furry ones and fish tank.
I am not sure if I can be of any help, I am not sure what kind of information you are looking for but here goes.
There is a fellow in South Australia and eastern states who has opened up conservation parks to protect our endangered Bilby's and other animals. He is totally against feral cats and even wears a dead cat as a hat (yuck).
Anyway, his name is John Walmsley and I just searched an Australian search engine and his name popped up a lot.
Hope this is of some help, if not, disregard.
Good luck with your debating.
Regards,
Susan

The search engine I used was www.anzwers.com.au (Aust and New Zealand).

Alan- tried to do this yesterday, but voy was down. if you type in (google search engine) Feral animals + Australia ,
a lot of site addresses come up- all points of view, from animal libbers down ( is there a down from there? LOL)
GOOD LUCK WITH IT. I am a fan of Dr. Wamsley- he does a great job, much better than our National Parks management. Unfortunately, after 9/11, he too lost funds, and is now looking at selling off sanctuaries. The "ripple effect " continues.
an ozzie story- as he's getting more active, I changed their feed bin from solid plastic to a bag-type affair- figured no drastic injuries could happen. a couple of mornings ago, went up to let them out, and couldn't see him! panic! I found him- curled up asleep IN the feed bin!! Somehow he got in, but gave up trying to get out, and went to sleep. He had a big yawn, a stretch, and went to look for food- looks like he's inherited a fairly settled nature! Th e feed bag now has a lowered side. Think I prefer puppies!!
Sorry about the disasters when you were away- I always lost fish/plants /budgies when housemates were"in-charge" It's not a nice feeling.
