Columbia
It was a day like any day; the sky was clear and blue,
Columbia was on its way; its mission now was through.
They turned so they could make the burn, and faced their craft around,
A little longer and they would see their friends upon the ground.
But something then went wrong up there, what we do not know,
The tiles started heating up, the ship began to glow.
We'll never know just what they saw or if they even knew,
The ship turned red, and then pure white, the situation grew.
One piece, three, then more were spotted falling towards the ground,
Time stood still, the people gasped, and then that awful sound.
From the Earth the ship was seen, we knew something was wrong,
White streaks across the eerie sky, it hadn't taken long.
We shake our heads; we wring our hands, and pray to God above,
At least our fallen comrades died doing what they loved.
If we asked them one and all was it worth the price they paid,
They'd probably smile and tell you yes, it was the choice we made.
Continue with our mission people, go back into space,
Do it for our memory, and for the human race.
