Subject: The son of perdition

Stan:
Re: son of perdition
"So show us where the son of perdition is mentioned in the old testament if you have understanding."

First, let's see where the "son of perdition" is mentioned in the NT:
First, the verse you use:
(KJV)
John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

Judas, the betrayer, is the son of perdition that has fulfilled this scripture of the OT:
(KJV)
Psa 41:9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

Hello DiscipleAO and God bless,

There is no short answer to your belief so this is going to be in depth for some, but it really is simple. I believe the teaching of Judas being the "son of perdition" is an incorrect teaching, and misleading, and also judgemental of Judas being sentenced to perish. This is the first time I have come across this belief so bringing forth Judas in a different light will be challenging and I hope interesting.

In the old testament there is only one mentioned by name who is sentenced to perish. Thats what perdition means.

Tracing the definition and origin of the word "perdition" is important because it leads us right to one of Satans names and roll as anti-christ:

{perdition}

Strongs # 684: Greek; [apoleia] ap-o'-lia from a derivation of 622 ruin or loss ( phys., spiritual or eternal ) - damnable ( -nation ) destruction, die, perdition, perish waist.

Strongs # 622: Greek; [apollumi] ap-ol-loo-mee to destroy fully ( reflexively to perish, or lose. ) lit. or fig. a destroyer, die, lose, mar, perish.

Strongs # 623 Greek; [Apolluon] part of 622 a destroyer ( i.e. Satan ) - Apollyon.

We recognize this name from Rev.9:11 when the fifth angel sounds his trumpet and these events, that transpire in the sixth trumpet, are put into action.

Rev.9:11
And they had a king over them which is the angel of the bottomles pit whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon

Abaddon in the Hebrew means destruction, to perish, or perishing. And here we have him ( the angel of the bottomless pit ) personified as the destroyer.

Again in Rev. 17, we are told of this one "from the bottomless pit" who "goes into perdition".

Rev.17:8
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not, and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundations of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

( Beholding this beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit means "they" are going to see him. Remember who ascends out of the pit? An angel, Apollyon, i.e Satan. Not a man. The conflict has always been between God and Satan. Satan is the destroyer. Satan is the son of perdition. Satan is sentenced to perish. And yes, God is going to allow this, "to test those that dwell on the earth". )

Compare these verses of Revelation with Ezk. 28 and Isaiah 14 and the events that transpire. Also we see in the Old testament that there is an underlying message to those in the time of the end, and the roll's, or the power commomly known as Antichrist, are given for us to see. History, as a type, will repeat itself. The king of Babylon ( confusion ) will come, and the whole world will go into captivity. Except for those who are sealed with the truth.

In Ezekiel 28 we have "THE PRINCE" AND "THE KING" OF TYRE.

In verses 1 and 2, "The prince of Tyre".
Ezkiel commisioned to speak.
In verses 2-6 is his description.
Type: a mere man in comparison with God.

In verses 11 and 12, "The King of Tyre".
Ezekiel commisioned to speak.
In verses 11-19 is his discription.
Antitype: Satan.

We need to notice the emphasis marked by the redundancy, where what is said is, emmediately after, put in another or opposite way to make it impossible for the sense to be missed.
Pay close attention and note "the type"

Tyre means "rock"

Ezekiel 28 {Type}
1
The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
2
Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
3
Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:
4
With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:
5
By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
6
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;
7
Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.
8
They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas.
9
Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.
10
Thou shalt die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.

{Antitype} Satan.

12
Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

13
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

( Note that this one was in the garden of Eden, and was created. Not born of woman. )

14
Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

( cherub can only be used of a supernatural being. covereth in the Hebrew means to overshadow or protect. Defend.
Take a good look at the verse. He was at the throne of God protecting it. This would have been in "the world that then was" ( 2 Peter 3:6 )

15
Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

( Referring to the period before Satans fall )

16.
By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

( God created Satan full of wisdom and beauty. It went to his head. Now Satan want's to take God's place. Remember these verses because in Isa. 14 the very same thing is brought up and Lucifer "the son of the morning" is identified as this one. )

17
Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

( Remember Rev. 17:8 where "they" behold the beast. Also make a note of God casting him to the ground. )

Now we find out what Satans sentence is:

18.
Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.

( Satan is turned to ashes from within by fire. Devour [akal] means burn up or consume. This will come to pass when he is cast into the lake of fire. )

19
All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

( Check out this word "terror" in the Hebrew as it is used here? [ballahah] It means alarm hence destruction. Same as the word Abaddon, which means destruction. The people are going to be alarmed alright when they find out they worshiped Satan thinking he was Jesus. )

Some other titles ( as a type and roll ) given to "the Antichrist", besides "King of Tyre" are:

little horn ( Dan.7:8, 8:9 )

"The king of Babylon" ( Isaiah 14:4 )

"The Assyian" ( Isaiah 14:25 )

Lucifer, son of the morning, ( Isaiah 14:12 ) in opposition to "the bright and morning star" ( Rev. 22:16 )

"the prince that shall come" ( Dan. 9:26 )

"the king of fierce countanence" ( Dan. 8:23 )

"the vile person" ( Dan. 11:21 )

"the willful king" ( Dan. 11:36 )

"The man of sin" ( 2 Thess. 2:3 )

"the son of perdition" ( 2 Thess 2:3. The same one Christ spoke of in John 17:12 )

"That wicked ( or lawless ) one" ( 2 Thess 2:8 )

The "beast" of ( Rev.13:11) personified as the Lamb slain with two horns, but spake as a dragon.

Among others.
