The Dog Days of summer are upon us and conversely there's little to do with your dog, just too hot. A few bright spots, but things won't really start to roll again until Sept.

Don't forget the Newf Romp n' Swim this Sunday, 7/27/03, 4pm at beautiful Downs Park in Pasadena, MD.

Sat 8/2 RESTON, VA: Hound Hike with NoVa Hiking Club http://members.aol.com/nvhc/ (scroll down to date) in shady Fox Mill District Park.

Sat 8/2 THURMONT, MD: If you want a bigger challenge than the above hike, try this one with the K9 Trailblazers http://www.k9trailblazers.org/gambrill/gambrill_hike_080203.htm.

Sat & Sun 8/2 & 8/3, HERNDON, VA: At the Fairfax County 4H Fair http://4hfairfax.org/visitors.html held at dog-friendly Frying Pan Park, you can watch the 4Hers put their dogs through their paces in obedience, rally obedience and showmanship beginning at 830 am on Sat in the dog show ring (behind the covered arena. As if that isn't enough, there's also a fun pet show with lots of prizes for things like waggiest tail, best costume and biggest ears. On Sun, there's agility and Canine Musical Freestyle. On both days there are horse shows, livestock judging, games, food, rides and much more. Free admission and parking, too. Unbeatable for an outing the whole family will enjoy!

Sat 8/9 9am, SOLOMON'S ISLAND, MD: Watch scantily-clad skinny people sweat while laboring through a 5K Run or do it yourself with your dog (1 mi walk also available) to benefit the Humane Society of Calvert Co. http://ruddercam.com/PetDay5KMain.htm .

Sun 8/17 ARNOLD, MD: All breed only (no obedience) dog show by the Annapolis Kennel Club http://www.infodog.com/clubs/2003082302.HTM at Anne Arundel Community College.

Sun 8/17, 8am- 4pm, HAVRE de GRACE, MD: Obedience Seminar w/ Linda Colflesh sponsored by NorthEast Kennel Club http://www.nemkc.org/ (scroll way down).

Sat 8/23 1pm, MOUNT AIRY, MD: Whine and Fleas (not wine & cheese) frisbee dog competition hosted by National Capital Air Canines at the beautiful Linganore Winery http://discdog.com/events/fleas/ (NOTE: website has the WRONG time! Set-up starts at 12 noon and competition begins at 1pm NOT 10 am). If you ever thought you might want to try tossing a flying disc for Rover to catch, this is the place to go (especially since you can taste some wine to make you brave) or else just marvel at the high-flying antics of the participants. If you have shade, bring it, since this is held on a grassy field and the shadow of a barn provides the only natural shade available close-by. However there is a pond a short walk away for your pooch to take a dip.

Sat 8/30 9am-12noon, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Try not to miss the 12th Annual Canine Games extravaganza put on by the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria http://alexandriaanimals.org/~awla/special_events.cfm . The website doesn't go into much detail, but this is quite an event with a lot of fun contests (bring your costume), loads of freebies (bring a tote bag) and much to look at (bring your camera).
