Subject: BWC needs to develop tradition, character, & alumni relations
In reply to: El Gaucho 's message, "Re: Bakersfield, Not Sac St" on 19:16:14 11/02/01 Fri

I don't want to see any expansion any time soon. I think the BWC member schools should focus on building tradition and character. These qualities will help to attract/retain quality players and coaches..., and thus strengthen the conference as a whole.

Ideally, I'd like to see 2 or 3 teams get into the NCAA mens basketball tourney each and every year. This conference needs depth. With that said, I'd like to see USU stay..., however, I certainly could not blame them for relocating if they wanted to find a home for their football program.

But, my impression of BWC member schools as a whole is that the conference provides a home for athletics. The general goal of these institutions is not to build or grow their programs - but to maintain their respective programs and remain financially viable.

I think schools that go beyond this effort are largely influenced by alumni and student support/interest - but mostly alumni. And I don't see a lot of alumni support.

With that said, can anyone reference what member schools have the most, if any, alumni support? I don't know of any school that has more than a nominal amount of alumni support/interest. UOP comes to mind.

I think the Cal Poly president is interested in improving athletics..., but that this effort competes with academic needs and implementation of the new Cal Poly Master Plan.

When expansion is considered, I think schools with a solid student/alumni base would be attractive additions. Schools in college towns, or where the student body makes up a large proportion of the community, come to mind. UC Davis & CSU Chico come to mind. I also like northern Califronia growth!

CSU Bakersfield looks attractive too..., becuase they'd seem to have a lot of support being that there is less to do there!
