BMF, I pretty much share your sentiments regarding Big West expansion. I too feel the conference needs some stability so I would like to see things remain as is for the next 3-4 years. In the long term, I also see USU leaving as pretty likely. They have a decent football team (losing record this year but with a murderous schedule) that gets good crowds at home games. So first chance they have to join the WAC or similar, they will take it. For replacement/expansion I think San Jose St is a likely candidate if football fails. They would be a good fit as they are somewhat of a rival for Pacific and were long-time members of the Big West before moving to the WAC.
I agree with BMF that a school with large community based support, which = better crowds, etc, is the type of school we should consider. CSU Bakersfield is probably the best fit with long-term expansion in mind. The Central Valley population is greatly expanding, I wouldn't be surprised if in ten years or so that this school will be similar to Fresno in terms of athletics. The questions with them are the move to D1 and whether or not they want football.
