This is a standard ploy for the plants to find something to bond to. A similar species, Hylocereus undatus, is quite fond of WOOD. In a perfect world, these adventitious roots would adhere to a wooden fence or structure, providing a stable platform for these types. Epiphyllums don't do this quite as frequently as H undatus, but it is all typical behavior.

In my experience this is one of the 'cactus' family that likes moist conditions. I think Nature is happy.
