Short answer first -- The probably wore the Texans helmets for they game because that's what they were still being billed as.

The WFL took over the franchise and sold it to a Shreveport backer on September 18 and then things got complicated.

Shortly after the announcement, a temporary injunction was granted forcing the team to play one more home game in Houston on Sept. 25 before being allowed to move. The injunction was sought not by the city of Houston, which couldn't have cared less, or by the Astrodome, who had a profitable tenant who paid their bills in the Oilers, but by at Houston meat business that was running a promotion at the next Texans home game.

On September 19, the Texans, who weren't really the Texans at this point, showed up in Birmingham for the WFL's nationally televised game of the week knowing they were headed to Shreveport. They were without their head coach, who had been suspended for urging his players to boycott the move, and their quarterback, who decided to quit the team. Predictably, they lost 42-14.

Three days later, a judge lifted the injunction, reasoning that a game featuring a bad, lame duck franchise with attendance issues wasn't likely to draw fans anyway. And off to Shreveport they went.

So now you know more about the Houston Texans move to Shreveport than you ever wanted to.
