Subject: Nicholls "1970s style helmet decal"

Nicholls will use a new logo today vs UIW, a white "N" inside a red oval-shape. This twitter account ('College Sports Logos') mentions that this design was worn by the 1971 team...but it's my understanding that Nicholls State didn't play until 1972 - am I mistaken? I'm also unaware of this design having ever been used by the team - I thought they used plain red helmets initially. Perhaps this design was used later in the 1970s - information for this team has proven elusive.

The Nicholls Equipment twitter account calls the design "1970s style" which could perhaps be interpreted as "this is a 1970s-looking design that was never actually used before by our team".

Any clarifying information would be appreciated!

Could have been a club or JV team in 1971.

I know back in the early 70s you couldn't play freshmen so maybe it was a JV only team.

That's apparently the case; I found a reference to "club-level team" for that year only.
