Subject: Jets vs Eagles trivia

I happened to see this bizarre fact today: The New York Jets have never defeated the Philadelphia Eagles (in eleven games played - looks like they're headed for 0-12).

Is there another pair of "old" teams in which one has never defeated the other? (excluding the Panthers, Jaguars, Texans, etc)

Nope. Not counting the Texans (who have a few teams they've never beaten) every other NFL team has beaten every other at least once.

I'm 99% sure the Jags and Panthers are included, too--even the New Browns crossed off the last 2 never-beaten teams off their list (Cowboys and Eagles) last season.

Thanks, that's such a strange statistic.

If I understand math correctly - if two teams each have a 50% change of winning and play each other 12 times, the chance that one team will win all 12 games is one in 2^12 = 4096 (or maybe one in 2048, since there are two teams).

I just went to pro-football-reference and confirmed--the Jags and Panthers have beaten everybody. The Texans have never beaten the Eagles or the Vikings, so that's 3 never-beaten match-ups remaining.

Looking at the Jets-Eagles matchup through the years, the only one that can really be called an upset would be 2015, when the 10-6 Jets lost to the 7-9 Eagles (with advanced stats like DVOA also believing the Jets were a better team). Every other year, the Jets ranged from demonstrably inferior to at best, even. Record-wise and even eye-test-wise. Still, the difference between the best team in the NFL in a given year and the worst is so much tighter than it is at the college level that you'd think the Jets would have run into a victory at some point.
