Subject: National Football League: “Color Rush” helmets

On selected Thursday games starting from tonight, the NFL and Nike will introduce “Color Rush”, a series of special (and one-off?) jersey combinations featuring certain teams.

Tonight’s game featuring the Bills and Jets will have both teams going monocolored red and white uniforms respectively. Helmet-wise, the Bills are identical, but the Jets will have a shiny logo and stripes and a chrome green facemask:

For this year, the other teams involved include Panthers (alternate), Titans (alternate), Cowboys (throwback), Rams (throwback), Jaguars (new), and Buccaneers (new). The games affected are tonight’s Week 10 matchup, Week 11 (Tennessee at Jacksonville), Week 12 (Carolina at Dallas), and Week 15 (Tampa Bay at Saint Louis).

The Titans and Jaguars matchup just had their designs leaked, and the latter may have a different helmet than usual (though from teaser images the Jacksonville jersey is more of a mustard yellow):

The NFL is also expecting that this experiment will spread to all teams on their Thursday night games starting next season.

For some people, this Color Rush promotion may come as Nike’s way to “modernize” all NFL teams in monochrome and throw away tradition (isn’t this what is happening to a majority of Division 1 colleges right now?). My opinion is that the jerseys themselves are fine, but the monocolored option is what people are lambasting about.

Anyway, as soon as photos from the game get released, would this be a significant enough change to add to the site?

Not on the color rush topic, but a few weeks ago (Week 7, October 26 vs. Tampa Bay), Washington wore their normal helmets but without the stripes.

I'll watch for those as they appear. My initial impression was that the Jets and Bills designs would not merit a separate helmet image, but I will look more closely at photographs from that game when and if I get a chance to do so. Trying to document the reflective properties of helmet features seems like an awful can of worms to open.

[> Color Rush helmets for 2016 -- Nameless, 16:08:12 09/15/16 Thu (128.248.217.39)

The 2016 Color Rush uniforms have been unveiled by Nike earlier yesterday, and four teams are expected to have some helmet change on their Thursday night games:

The 10/13/16 matchup between Denver and San Diego will have two new helmets: Denver's is likely a navy shell, retro 1975-1996 logo and stripes (note the close placement of the decals), and blue mask: http://boards.sportslogos.net/uploads/monthly_2016_09/temp160912_colorrush_4--nfl_mezz_1280_1024.jpg.90b6cfbe2718bb7d70573848c7c55579.jpg

San Diego will have a white shell, plain yellow lightning bolt on both sides, and yellow mask: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CsPNs2FVYAA6hZc.jpg:large

On 12/22 against Philadelphia, the New York Giants will wear their 1980-1999 helmets (the ones with the underlined "GIANTS" on the side).

And finally tonight, the New York Jets will have a white facemask with the normal colored logos and stripes (not the shiny version from last year): http://boards.sportslogos.net/uploads/monthly_2016_09/57d7432d688ad_ScreenShot2016-09-12at8.05.51PM.thumb.png.f1fa79782e67e8861fd337c606aadebe.png
Their duel is against Buffalo again, and it will thankfully not be "colorblind rush" this time.

The remaining 28 teams should have their normal helmets.

Those were mockups only, but the dates included should serve as a heads-up to when the new helmets will appear.

Remember--Color Rush refers to jerseys, pants, and shoes the same color, not necessarily helmets. Also, this season all of the games that are a part of the Thursday Night Football package are also a part of Color Rush. So this means that the games that aren't on a Thursday but ARE a part of the TNF package will still get the Color Rush treatment. (This affects the Jets-Dolphins game on a Saturday, as well as a Steelers game for Christmas Day, for example. All affected games would be here: http://www.nfl.com/schedules/2016/TNF)

[> [> Bills Color Rush tomorrow -- Nameless, 12:32:24 11/01/17 Wed (140.192.50.117)

Tomorrow's Color Rush game is the one that started this whole mess of uniforms, the Bills and the Jets. While New York will once again wear their chrome green mask variety, Buffalo's tweak is a white mask instead of their usual grey:

The Bills have stated in a tweet that they will go all-white for November 2, so at least we won't have the "colorblind rush" problem from last time.

Luckily the helmet insanity from NCAA football won't happen in the NFL as all players must wear the same helmet all year. This is meant to allow for better fit and to decrease the amount of injuries.
I hope someone bankrupts Nike for starting this every week new helmet crap with Oregon. It's going to happen when someone sues for brain injuries in the NCAA.
