Tutt spurs ORU win

Freshman scores 22 of his 25 in second half in victory over Cougars

Ken Tutt had another one of those games where the end was better than the start.

The freshman guard scored 22 of his 25 points after intermission as Oral Roberts pulled away to a 75-61 victory over Chicago State on Thursday night before 4,837 spectators at the Mabee Center.

After hitting just 1-of-4 in the first half, Tutt made his first four shots in the second half, including three 3-pointers, and scored 13 points in a 2:38 span.

That got the Golden Eagles off and running. They eventually expanded a 30-27 halftime lead to 62-42 and led by double digits for the final 15:38.

"I like how we played in the second half," said ORU coach Scott Sutton, who had his father, Oklahoma State head coach Eddie Sutton, and mother, Patsy, watching from the first row.

"That's how we played during that eight-game winning streak. We were doing a pretty good

job of guarding, got some easy baskets, and Ken was, of course, terrific," Sutton said.

Tutt, the nation's second-leading freshman scorer, continued a torrid stretch, averaging 27.5 points over his past six games. It was his 13th game of the season with 20 or more.

Of late, his points have come in the second half. He had 25 of his 28 in the final half at Valparaiso last Thursday night and 22 of 30 in the second half at Western Illinois last Saturday.

"It seems like teams start out the game keyed up to keep the ball out of my hands," Tutt said. "In the second half, it seems like they tend to back off and that's when I try to make my move."

"You can only contain him for so long," said Chicago State first-year coach Kevin Jones. "He can really shoot the ball."

Jones complained about officiating that sent ORU to the line 26 times (the Eagles made 25) to Chicago State's 10. Jones was called for two technical fouls. The second came with 1:34 left, and when Jones tried to discuss it with official Beau Borosky, Borosky ejected him.

"I called 'five-out', which is the name of the offense I wanted us to run, and (Boroski) came over and said, 'You're out,' " Jones said.

That left the Cougars without a coach on the bench for the final 1:34. Jones said he had two assistants on the road recruiting and a third visiting a sick parent.

ORU sophomore guard Jonathan Bluitt chipped in 13 points, while freshman Caleb Green and senior Ralph Charles scored 10 each. Green also had 10 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season.

Tony Weeden led Chicago State (9-18, 7-6) with 21 points.

ORU (15-9, 8-5) kept alive its hopes of sharing the regular-season Mid-Continent Conference title. The Eagles climbed into a third-place tie with Indiana-Purdue, which was upset at home Thursday by eighth-place Oakland (Mich.). Oakland plays at ORU on Saturday night.

The Eagles played without starting junior forward Matt Gastel, who developed back spasms in pre-game drills, and freshman Yemi Ogunoye, who is sidelined indefinitely with a herniated disc. Sutton said he didn't know if Gastel would be ready for Saturday's game.

TU's Parker, ORU's Atkinson grab academic honor

By Staff Reports
2/20/2004

Senior guards Josh Atkinson of Oral Roberts and Jason Parker of Tulsa have been named to the 2004 Academic All-District VI basketball team.

The five-man team was chosen by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. District VI covers Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Two other members of the team have regional ties -- Arkansas senior forward Billy Pharis and OC St. Mary product Eric Castro, a junior forward at Southern Methodist.

Oklahoma senior Caton Hill was named to the women's first-team squad. Tulsa junior Sarah Lundberg was named to the women's second team.

Parker, with a 3.52 grade-point average, has achieved one TU degree and is seeking a second in business management systems. He leads the Hurricane in scoring with 18.1 points per game and ranks as the 13th-leading scorer in school history with 1,327 points.

Atkinson has a 3.22 grade-point average in marketing and

public relations. He averages 11.6 points and 3.7 rebounds and is the 23rd player in ORU history to score 1,000 points.

Pharis, who transferred from SMU to Arkansas, has a 3.86 grade-point average in political science while averaging 6.5 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Hill has a 3.63 grade-point average in zoology.
