Oakland, Mich., is doomed to finish eighth in the Mid-Continent Conference, but it's still the team that coaches and media picked to win the regular-season title.

The Grizzlies finally seem to be playing like they should have been all season.

The turnaround doesn't come at the best time for Oral Roberts, with Oakland due to visit the Mabee Center on Saturday night.

The Grizzlies' 76-73 upset of IUPUI on Thursday night was their fourth win in the last seven games.

"They still have three of the best players in the league," ORU coach Scott Sutton said. "They're obviously playing with a lot more confidence.

"The win at (IUPUI) was huge for them. I'm sure (Oakland coach Greg Kampe) is telling his guys, 'We're peaking at the right time. We can turn this thing around.' "

After being chosen the preseason favorites, the Grizzlies caught every imaginable bad break and lost six of their first seven conference games.

Five were decided in the closing seconds or overtime. ORU won 70-68 at Oakland on Jan. 15 on freshman Ken Tutt's 15-foot jump shot with 3.5 seconds left.

Unless the Grizzlies can overtake seventh-place Southern Utah, Oakland will have to face the No. 1 seed, probably Valparaiso, in the first round of the conference tournament next month in Kansas City, Mo.

"A lot of people around here figured us to be in that 1-8 game," quipped Kampe, who is in his 20th season coaching at Oakland. "But they figured on us to play an easier opponent."

Point guard DeMarcus Ishmeal, a junior college transfer, has played his best games since the loss to ORU.

The Grizzlies also still have one of the Mid-Con's best collections of veteran talent.

Senior guard Mike Helms is first in league scoring (23.1); junior swingman Rawle Marshall is sixth (17.7) and senior forward Cortney Scott is third in rebounding (8.4).

The trio combined for 58 points and 19 rebounds against the Jaguars.

IUPUI's loss revived ORU's chances of sharing the league title.

The Eagles (15-9) must win their final three games and hope Valparaiso loses at least one of its remaining two.

Tutt leads Oral Roberts in scoring, averaging 20.6 points a game.

Saturday's game is ORU's homecoming and the last of four Mid-Con regular-season games to be televised by Fox Sports Network. Fox will also air the men's semifinals and women's championship games from the conference tournament.

Junior forward Matt Gastel sat out Thursday's 75-61 win over Chicago State after experiencing back spasms before the game. Sutton said Gastel is questionable for Saturday's game.

Yemi Ogunoye also missed the Chicago State game and is out indefinitely with a herniated disc, Sutton said.
