S. Utah at ORU: Eagles aim for share of title

If Mid-Continent Conference basketball coaches are right about this, it's pointless to worry about the numerous seeding possibilities for the upcoming conference tournament.

As Southern Utah coach Bill Evans says, "there isn't a lot of difference between the teams at the bottom and the teams at the top."

ORU coach Scott Sutton said he can't remember when all eight teams that open play in Kansas City on March 7 have been more capable of winning in the first round.

"It wouldn't surprise me one bit if a seven or eight seed knocked off a one or a two," Sutton said. "The top seed is going to have its hands full."

Evans' seventh-place Thunderbirds beat Valparaiso by 17 last weekend. The Crusaders had sole possession of first place at the time.

The Thunderbirds visit ORU on Saturday night for both teams' regular-season finale.

The Eagles can still share the regular-season title if a complicated scenario falls into place.

A win Saturday would assure them of no worse than the fifth seed in the tournament.

"We need to play well," Sutton said. "You need to build momentum going into the tournament and we want to win for our seniors (Josh Atkinson and Ralph Charles)."

The Eagles (16-10, 9-6) lost their chance for the top seed when they lost at Centenary 71-68 on Thursday night. Southern Utah (10-16, 5-10) lost at Missouri-Kansas City 74-62.

Southern has played several games without injured 6-foot-8 Robbie Warren, but still ranks as one of the Mid-Con's top defensive teams -- second in scoring defense and field-goal percentage.

ORU ranks eighth nationally in scoring offense, averaging 81.6 points per game.

The Thunderbirds shoot fewer 3-pointers than any Mid-Con team except Centenary, but lead the league by a wide margin in 3-point percentage (.427). David Palmer (.491) and Jason Baker (.457) are 1-2 individually.

How far is the bottom from the top in the Mid-Con?

Last-place Oakland (Mich.) was picked to win the regular-season title, but lost six games in the closing seconds or overtime.

ORU had to rally from a 12-point deficit to beat Oakland in Tulsa last weekend.

"I wouldn't want to be the top-seeded team playing Oakland in the first round," Evans said.

More than one-third of the league's games -- 27 in all -- were decided by five points or less, or in overtime.

Centenary was 5-1 in such games. Chicago State was 5-0. ORU was 2-3 and Southern Utah was 2-4.

Said Evans, "If we make four free throws, we have two more wins."
