Tigers pick aide

It appears the University of the Pacific women's basketball program has found its man.

The Record learned Monday that Craig Jackson will be introduced as Pacific's new coach at a press conference at 4 p.m. today.

Jackson, who couldn't be reached for comment on Monday, has been the Tigers' top assistant the past four years under Sherri Murrell, who resigned in March to take over the program at Washington State. In 1996-97, Jackson was the head coach at Linn-Benton Community College in Oregon.

Jackson was one of four candidates interviewed on campus the past two weeks. Cori Close, an assistant the past seven years at UC Santa Barbara, reportedly was offered the job on Friday but turned it down during the weekend.

Close told the Santa Barbara News-Press in Monday's edition, "I battled in my heart all night. I feel I'm in the center of where I should be. The opportunity was fantastic. This is nothing against Pacific. They're going to do great things. (Athletic director) Lynn King has them doing great things."

Close also couldn't be reached for comment, but it's widely known that Gauchos coach Mark French is a candidate for the coaching vacancy at Vanderbilt, and Close would be a prime choice to replace him.

Pepperdine assistant Jody Wynn and former Nebraska and San Jose Lasers (American Basketball League) head coach Angela Beck also were interviewed.

Jackson was the only assistant on Murrell's staff to stay at Pacific. He oversaw individual workouts and maintained close contact with the players, who reportedly gave him their full support.

Jackson has experience in all facets of the program, including recruiting, and has worked closely with the forwards and centers. Last season, sophomore center Gillian d'Hondt was the only underclassmen named first-team All-Big West. Sophomore forward Andrea Nederostek, sophomore center Alicia Smith and junior forward Vanessa Dupont also showed marked improvement.

The Tigers have had three consecutive seasons with 17 or more victories, and last season reached the Big West Tournament championship game for the first time in six years.
