Tiger's late charge just misses tourney title

EL DORADO HILLS -- The putt that would have won the tournament grazed the edge of the cup.

Matt Hansen let a golden opportunity slip away in quest of medalist honors at the Big West Championship on Tuesday at Serrano Country Club. He wouldn't have been in that position had he not taken advantage of some opportunities.

Hansen barely missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have broken a three-way tie with UC Irvine's Ryan Armstrong and Jeff Coburn.

Armstrong birdied the first hole of sudden death to lead the Anteaters to the team title. Hansen's surge, and that of teammates Jason Higton and Tom O'Stasik, helped the Tigers surpass Long Beach State for second place.

''It was a battle,'' said Hansen, who started the day three shots behind Coburn, the leader after two rounds. ''I struggled on the front, but after the eighth hole, I started to play really well.''

Higton shot 2-under 70 on Tuesday and finished fifth overall at 3-under 213, and O'Stasik shot even-par for the day and was 4-over for the tournament in 11th place. Ben Scribner shot 73 Tuesday and finished tied for 18th at 8-over 224.

The Tigers picked up five strokes on UC Irvine and 10 on the 49ers on another gorgeous day for golf.

Higton, the conference leader in scoring average entering the tournament, was named Big West player of the year after the tournament.

''It's a very nice honor, but I'd trade it in for a team championship,'' Higton said. ''We played well.''

The Tigers expect to receive an invitation to the NCAA Regionals in early May.

Coburn was in control before he found trouble on the par-3 11th, which features an elevated tee and well-guarded green. His tee shot rested in the rough short of the green, and his chip bounced off a rock and into the hazard. He chipped from the drop area, then three-putted for a quadruple bogey.

Hansen, who was grouped with Coburn, made a marvelous chip for eagle on the par-5 13th, and a birdie from 5-feet on the difficult par-3 15th, which has water and sand in front and a shallow green. Both players sank short birdie putts on the par-5 16th, then Hansen had birdies lip out on 17 and 18.

''Matt, obviously, played really well, and Jason played like he always plays,'' Tigers coach Jason Preeo said. ''Tom really has played better, and Ben had a good final round. I think we'll definitely have a good shot going through regionals.''
