Tigers survive elements

Staff and wire reports

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- The third round of the NCAA championship turned into a survival test Friday as howling wind, high humidity, hail, rain, lightning and thunder sent scores soaring on Ohio State's Scarlet Course.

Top-ranked Georgia Tech and Alabama-Birmingham's Graeme McDowell overcame the difficult conditions Friday to top the team and individual leaderboards. University of the Pacific shot its best round of the tournament and moved into the top 20 going into today's final round.

''It was very, very tough out there. Par was maybe one or two shots higher,'' said McDowell, a native of Northern Ireland. ''The wind seemed to be across all day. It was never helping or against. You were always fighting it a bit. It was a grind, really. Nothing came easy.''

After two days of wet and relatively windless conditions, swirling gusts of 20-to-30 mph and faster conditions made scores balloon, with only 20 players in the 156-man field breaking par.

Tom O'Stasik led Pacific with a 68 and Matt Hansen shot a 69 as the Tigers moved from 27th to 20th place. Pacific shot 286 on Friday, good for an overall 870.

''Tom and Matt played very well, especially in the wind,'' Pacific coach Jason Preeo said. ''We're definitely going in the right direction. One more good round and we should move into the top 15, which would be a good showing.''

Hansen is leading the Togers through three rounds with a 215, and Ben Scribner had a 220.

McDowell shot his second consecutive 4-under 67 and leads the individual race at 8-under 205. Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan (67) was a shot back, and second-round leader Brock Mackenzie of Washington was at 207 after a 72.

McDowell began his round on the back nine and had birdies at 11, 12 and 13. He hit his tee shot within a foot at the par-3 17th before picking up his only bogey of the day at 18. He parred out except for a birdie on No. 4.

McDowell, a junior who opened with a 71, has 13 birdies and five bogeys for the tournament.

Mahan's round included two eagles -- reaching the par-5 4th and 12th in two and then making putts of 8 feet and 12 feet, respectively.

Eight players are within four shots of the medal lead, while the top 10 teams are within six shots.

''Obviously there'll be a bunch of people going to bed tonight excited to get up tomorrow and have something great happen,'' Tech coach Bruce Heppler said.

UAB is participating in only its second NCAA tournament. McDowell placed 16th a year ago.

Georgia Tech -- which has produced pros David Duval, Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar and Bryce Molder -- has never won a team title.

The Yellow Jackets, who started the day tied for the lead with second-ranked Clemson, shot a 6-over 290 and still took over the tnp spot at 1-over 853.
