Tigers send seven swimmers to Austin

The Record

They're going to need to book more than one room for University of the Pacific's women's swimming team in Austin, Texas.

That's because Pacific will send a record seven swimmers to the NCAA Swimming Championships March 21-23.

Pacific, which sent a program-best three swimmers last year when the Tigers finished 28th as a team, will send junior Kristy Matthews, sophomores Robin Errecart, Shannon Catalano, Kris Willey and Sarah Marshall and freshmen Heidi Schmidt and Lyndsay McNamee.

"We went from being a laughing stock in the league four years ago to being one of the brightest up and coming programs on the NCAA scene," coach Ray Looze said.

The Tigers send a quarter of their team to the NCAA meet on the heals of winning the Big West Conference Championship for the first time.

Catalano, Marshall and Willey all swam at the NCAA meet a year ago with Catalano and Marshall earning All-American honors for finishing among the top eight in the 100-yard butterfly.

Catalano, from Clovis, will swim the 50 freestyle, 100 and 200 butterflies as well as some of the relays.

Marshall, from Dixon, will swim the 100 and 200 backstrokes and 100 butterfly as well as relays and Willey, a graduate of Lodi High School, will swim the 200 and 400 IM and the 200 backstroke.

Matthews, from Walnut Creek, will swim the 200-yard individual medley, the 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke and Errecart, from Lincoln High School, will compete in the 500 and 200 freestyles and 200 butterfly.

Schmidt, from Homestead High in Cupertino, will swim the 100 and 200 breaststrokes and 200 IM and McNamee, also from Lincoln High, will swim the 50 free and 200 medley relay.

Pacific's 400 medley relay team is seeded seventh in the meet and the 200 medley relay is seeded eighth.

"We have a chance to pick up some points there and with this number of swimmers, we have a chance to finish in the top 15," Looze said.

Individually, Looze said, Schmidt in the 100 breaststroke, Catalano in the 100 and 200 butterflies and Marshall in all of her events, have the best seedings based on their times.

"But everybody we're bringing has a chance," Looze said.
